Bowel cancer is a general term for cancer that begins in the large bowel. Depending on where the cancer starts, bowel cancer is sometimes called colon or rectal cancer. Bowel cancer is one of the most common types of cancer diagnosed in the UK.

Bowel cancer can occur at any age, however, it’s most common in older adults. If you do develop bowel cancer, your doctor will work with you to tailor a treatment plan to your specific cancer and needs. The plan may include a combination of radiation, surgery and drug treatments, such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy.

Why do I need Endoscopy?

Our consultants will often recommend endoscopy to evaluate:

  • For early cancer detection
  • Stomach pain
  • Ulcers, gastritis, or difficulty swallowing
  • Digestive system bleeding
  • Changes in bowel habits (chronic constipation or diarrhea)
  • Polyps or growths in the colon
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss

These symptoms can be caused by conditions other than bowel cancer, but you should always have them checked by your doctor.

The 3 main symptoms of bowel cancer are:

  • Persistent blood in your poo: That happens for no obvious reason or is associated with a change in bowel habit

  • A persistent change in your bowel habit: Which is usually having to poo more, and your poo may also become more runny

  • Persistent lower abdominal (tummy) pain, bloating or discomfort: That's always caused by eating and may be associated with loss of appetite or significant unintentional weight loss

Sometimes cancer can block the bowel. This is called a bowel obstruction. The symptoms include:

  • Cramping pains in the abdomen
  • Feeling bloated
  • Constipation and being unable to pass wind
  • Being sick

Early Signs & Symptoms of Bowel Cancer

Bowel cancer screening is offered every 2 years to men and women aged 60 to 74 and people who have early signs and symptoms can go for screening irrespective of their age.

  • More accurate – it can detect smaller signs of blood hidden in poo samples, which can be an early sign of bowel cancer
  • Easier to use – only one sample is required. The gFOBt required three samples to be taken on three different days

The review scope was extended to include all screening programmes which target the adult population and require people to be actively go for bowel screening.

Why Chartwell Hospital

  • When should I be screened for Bowel Cancer?

Talk to your doctor about screening options to catch bowel cancer before it starts. In general, people should start regular screenings around 50.

However, your doctor may recommend you start screenings at an earlier age or have them more frequently if you are in a high-risk group, such as having a family history of bowel cancer.

  • How do you test for Bowel Cancer?

Our doctor will discuss with you screening options that best fit your needs. Options at The Chartwell Hospital include:

    • Colonoscopy which uses a camera on a long flexible tube inserted into the rectum. (Read more about colonoscopy at The Chartwell Hospital.)

    • Fecal occult blood test (FOBT) and fecal immunochemical test (FIT), which use stool samples to find hidden (occult) blood.

    • Virtual colonoscopy, which uses a CT scan to produce cross-sectional images of the abdominal organs, allowing the doctor to detect changes or abnormalities in the colon and rectum. To help create clear images, a small tube (catheter) is placed inside your rectum to fill your colon with air or carbon dioxide.
  • Is Colonoscopy Painful?

A colonoscopy should not be painful. But you can ask for the procedure to be stopped at any time.

  • Do I need a GP referral or self-referral?

For this, you do not need referral from NHS, it is a self-pay endoscopy.

If you have NHS referral, share with our team and they will contact you. However, most of the patients with NHS waiting for a longer period of time to get a referral, there will be a chance of spreading disease.
