Why do I need Endoscopy?

Colonoscopy: During this, doctor will view your entire colon using a thin, flexible, lighted tube with a camera at the end. During the procedure, your doctor can also take small samples of tissue (biopsy) for laboratory analysis.

Gastroscopy: In this procedure, Doctors will visually examine your upper digestive system with a tiny camera on the end of a long, flexible tube. A specialist in diseases of the digestive system (gastroenterologist) uses a gastroscopy to diagnose and, treat conditions that affect the oesophagus, stomach and beginning of the small intestine (duodenum).

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy: Your doctor uses a slender, flexible, lighted tube to examine the rectum and sigmoid, the large portion of your colon. If your colon is severely inflamed, your doctor may perform this test instead of a full colonoscopy.

New Paragraph

  • Is Endoscopy Painful?

    Is Endoscopy Painful?

The examination is very quick and takes on average 3-5 minutes to complete. This is not a painful procedure. Most patients are sensitive to the camera passing down the throat, so anaesthetic throat spray and a light sedative injection can make examination much more comfortable.

  • Is Endoscopy Safe?

Yes, these examinations are safe, especially when carried out as part of prevention. The risk of complications is very low.

  • How Do I Prepare for Endoscopy?

Examining the upper digestive system requires nothing more than fasting for 6-8 hours prior to the procedure. To examine the colon, it must be cleared of stool. Therefore, a laxative or group of laxatives is given on the day before the procedure.

Also, our practitioners will discuss about it.

  • Do I need a GP referral or self-referral?

For this, you do not need referral from NHS, it is a self-pay endoscopy.

If you have NHS referral, share with our team and they will contact you. However, most of the patients with NHS waiting for a longer period of time to get a referral, there will be a chance of spreading disease.
