Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
If you suffer from chronic heartburn, you may have gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), a condition where your stomach acid leaks back up into the oesophagus, which runs from your throat to your stomach. It is usually caused by a weakening of the ring of muscle at the bottom of the oesophagus. About a quarter of the population will experience an episode every year. GORD is often a chronic condition, which means you may experience recurring symptoms. In some cases, acid reflux causes damage to the lining of the oesophagus and needs careful treatment to avoid the development of complications such as ulcer, stricture or even cancer formation.
Diagnosis & Treatment
Diagnosis
Tests used to diagnose GORD include X-ray, endoscopy, ambulatory acid probe tests, and oesophageal motility tests. Our clinicians will determine which technique is right for you.
Patients have a number of options to choose from when determining treatment methods for GORD. The most common is medication to help to control the heartburn. These drugs include antacids, H2-Receptor blockers, proton pump inhibitors, and prokinetic agents. In addition to medication, there are a variety of surgical procedures used to treat the disease.
Treatment
At Chartwell Digestive Hospital, however, we believe that many patients can treat their GORD symptoms simply by looking more deeply into their diet. To help them do that, we provide one-to-one counselling with a registered dietician to help create a nutritional plan customized to our patients’ needs. By avoiding certain triggers and eating right, many of our patients are able to find relief from their symptoms.
