Early Signs & Symptoms of Cancer

Cancer can often be prevented through regular screening, which can find polyps before they become cancerous. Talk with your doctor about when screening should begin based on your health conditions irrespective of your age.

Colonoscopy: A colonoscopy allows the doctor to look inside the entire rectum and colon while a patient is sedated. A flexible, lighted tube called a colonoscope is inserted into the rectum and the entire colon to look for polyps or cancer.

Gastroscopy: A gastroscopy is a test that looks at the inside of your food pipe (oesophagus), stomach and the first part of your small intestine (small bowel). A doctor or specialist nurse (endoscopist) does the test. They use a long flexible tube which has a tiny camera and light at the end.

Sigmoidoscopy: A sigmoidoscopy uses a flexible, lighted tube that is inserted into the rectum and lower colon to check for polyps, cancer, and other abnormalities. During this procedure, a doctor can remove polyps or other tissue for later examination.

Fecal occult blood test (FOBT) and fecal immunochemical test (FIT): A fecal occult blood test is used to find blood in the feces, or stool, which can be a sign of polyps or cancer.

Stool DNA tests: This test analyses the DNA from a person’s stool sample to look for cancer. It uses changes in the DNA that occur in polyps and cancers to find out if a colonoscopy needs to be done.

Why Chartwell Hospital

  • Who is eligible for cancer screening?

Cancer screening is offered every 2 years to men and women aged over 50 year.

However, your doctor may recommend you to start screenings at an earlier age or have them more frequently if you are in a high-risk group, such as having a family history of cancer or you have early symptoms of it.

  • Why should you get cancer screening?

Checking for cancer (or for abnormal cells that may become cancer) in people who have no symptoms is called screening. Several screening tests have been shown to detect cancer early and to reduce the chance of spreading disease.

  • How will I receive my results?

Once you have had your screening, your report will be emailed to you in PDF format, usually same day or within 2 to 3 working days.

  • Do I need a GP referral or self-referral?

For this, you do not need referral from NHS, it is a self-pay endoscopy.

If you have NHS referral, share with our team and they will help you book endoscopy test suggested by your GP.
