Early Detection Could save Your Life - Free Consultations

A gastroscopy is a type of endoscopy. This means the procedure is carried out using a narrow, flexible tube called an endoscope. This has a light at the end and a camera to allow your doctor to see images of your insides on a screen.
With help of this, you doctors find the possible causes of any problems you have in the gullet, stomach or small intestine. It’s also a useful and painless way for doctors to check how diagnosed gastrointestinal conditions are progressing.

- Polyps or growths in the colon
- Weakness or fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss
You may ned to go for a gastroscopy if you have any of a range of symptoms, many of which will be uncomfortable and affect your day-to-day activities. They can include:
- Chronic or recurring heartburn, nausea or vomiting
- Nausea over a longer period of time
- Stomach pain

- Black stool or blood in your stool
- Weight loss for no apparent reason
- Suspected peptic ulcer

Some of these symptoms can indicate conditions such as stomach ulcers, hiatus hernia, coeliac disease or, in some cases, cancer of the stomach or oesophagus.

Why do I need Gastroscopy?
Your doctor will give you specific instructions to prepare for your gastroscopy. In some cases your doctor may ask that you:
- Fast before the Gastroscopy: You will need to stop drinking and eating four to eight hours before your endoscopy to ensure your stomach is empty for the procedure
- Stop taking certain medications: You will need to stop taking certain blood-thinning medications in the days before your endoscopy. Blood thinners may increase your risk of bleeding if certain procedures are performed during the endoscopy. If you have chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure, your doctor will give you specific instructions regarding your medications
Tell your doctor about all the medications and supplements you're taking before your gastroscopy.

Why do I need Gastroscopy?
A Gastroscopy is used to diagnose and, sometimes, treat conditions that affect the upper part of your digestive system, including the oesophagus, stomach and beginning of the small intestine (duodenum).
-
Is Gastroscopy Painful?
Gastroscopy is usually not painful, and patients generally do not feel anything at all. Most gastroscopies are performed using “intravenous sedation” or “twilight sedation” in which patients are drowsy, but comfortable and still breathing on their own.
-
What happens during the Gastroscopy?
You will be taken to an examination room for the procedure. Once sat on the trolley the nurse or doctor will spray the back of your throat with a local anaesthetic. This makes your throat go numb quite quickly and you may start to feel as if you can’t swallow, don’t panic you can swallow but just may not feel it.
-
How long does a Gastroscopy take?
It should take 30 to 45 minutes to have your gastroscopy. But you might be at the hospital for around 2 hours from getting there to going home. You'll usually be told if any growths (polyps) have been removed.
-
Do I need a GP referral or self-referral?
For this, you do not need referral from NHS, it is a self-pay Gastroscopy.
If you have NHS referral, share with our team and they will contact you. However, most of the patients with NHS waiting for a longer period of time to get a referral, there will be a chance of spreading disease.
