If your doctor has recommended that you undergo a gastroscopy, you may be wondering what the exact purpose of this procedure may be. The truth is a gastroscopy is an imperative way to diagnose problems of the upper digestive system.
Using a gastroscopy, your doctor can diagnose and treat problems associated with your oesophagus, duodenum, stomach, and upper intestine. But what does it entail? During a gastroscopy, a thin, flexible tube is inserted into the mouth and guided down into your oesophagus, stomach, and small intestine. The tube then dilates the oesophagus to allow for better visibility and access to the upper part of the digestive system.
The tube has a small camera attached to the end which allows the Gastroenterologist to view the upper section of the digestive system. The Gastroenterologist can also take a small tissue sample for biopsy and remove any polyps or abnormal growths they see during the procedure.
